Famous since the 19th century, polka dots are one of the most common prints used in thousands of different things as clothes, shoes, decorative objects, accessories, painting…  They are nothing more than an array of filled circles, generally of the same size and spaced relatively close to each other. So if you are a fan of polka dots or if you like this pattern  we will show you how to customize some of the things you already have at home transforming them in polka dot items full of style and elegance.

Polka Dots Jeans

Transform and old pair of jeans in something new printing polka dots on them. It´s really easy and cheap since you will only need some fabric paint and a circular sponge brush (the size will depend on you. If you want small dots you can use a Bleach pen). Soak the sponge on the paint, remove the excess in a rag and start making the dots. It is important to follow a layout and try to make the dots equally spaced. After doing the front part, wait them dry and do the same on the back. Your new polka jeans are ready to be used!

Reusing Old Vinyl Records http://www.socreativethings.com/reusing-old-vinyl-records/ http://www.socreativethings.com/reusing-old-vinyl-records/#comments Tue, 11 Jun 2013 08:00:46 +0000 http://www.socreativethings.com/?p=1160 Creative uses for Vinyl Records

Created in the early years of the 20th century to serve as a store of sounds and songs, vinyl records lost their function in the final years on the same century when they were replaced for something more modern and compact: the CD. However, the vinyl records are still loved by lots of people who like to use old objects to decorate their home. In this post, we will show you four DIY projects using old vinyl records as base to creative and beautiful decorative pieces that will bring an elegant and vintage style to your house.

First of all, it is important to mention that vinyl records are made of a substance called polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and a respiratory protection is always necessary when you are cutting or drilling it. It is also an easy flammable material, so never leave it unattended while you are doing the projects. Your safety is always in first place!

Magazine Stand

You can make a cool magazine stand using only some old vinyl records and hot water. Boil some water and carefully pour it in a tray holding the record straight up. The material will soften so you will use a cutting board to make pressure on the record while you are warping it. After the record gets the correct shape, remove it from the hot water and let it cold. Now it is only hang them in a wall using a drilling and some nails and place your magazines and newspapers there.

Dessert Stand

Perfect for themed parties, the vinyl records stands can bring lots of charm and style to any table decoration. To make it you will need 3 vinyl records of different sizes and a cake stand kit: rolls, screws and washers (you can buy them in sites as e-bay and amazon). Now you only need to build the stand using the washers to tighten the rolls in the record hole. You can put some stick felt pads under the records to protect the bottom of your stand.

Vinyl Bowls

Very easy to do, vinyl bowls are perfect to put some snacks in a party or to decorate your dinner table with some fruits inside. Preheat your oven around 185° C for ten minutes and place a cooking tray with a large metal bowl upside down inside it. Wait five minutes until the bowl gets hot and place the record on the top of it. When you see the record is dropping over the bowl and pliable enough to shape, takes it out from the oven and put it immediately inside the bowl (use protective gloves) to shape it better. Let your vinyl record cool and take it out from the metal bowl.

Vinyl Record Clock

If you need a clock but are looking for something different from the usual ones, you can try this project. Really easy and cheap, a vinyl record clock is a wonderful option for the fans of music and vintage objects. To make your clock you will only need a vinyl record and a clock kit (you can buy this one in department stores). Use the hole of the vinyl to build the clock as it is explained in its package. You can glue the numbers that come with the kit using instant glue or make your own numbers.

Customize Your High Heel Shoes http://www.socreativethings.com/customize-your-high-heel-shoes/ http://www.socreativethings.com/customize-your-high-heel-shoes/#comments Mon, 03 Jun 2013 07:23:39 +0000 http://www.socreativethings.com/?p=1123 DIY High Heel Shoes

Everybody has that favorite shoes we are always using more than the other ones. Maybe because they are extremely comfortable and beautiful or maybe because we get used to wear only them, it is really sad when they start getting worn and old.  It is always painful get rid of shoes we love and some people prefer don´t do it. If you are like this, we will give you some suggestions to customize your shoes in very simple DIY projects that you can do easily.

Before starting any projects it is important to be sure your shoes are cleans and dry. If the sole is damage it would be good to repair them before the customization. Look for a shop that does this kind of service in the place where you live. You can also do these projects using new shoes that you don´t like much or are outdate. Here are them:

Spray Paint Shoes

This simple project is the most efficient way to cover any damaged part or change the color of your shoes. First you need to choose a spray paint color for your shoes, we recommend you to do this project with synthetic or leather shoes because they accept better the paint. Start covering all the parts that you don´t want to be painted using a tape (sole, claps and inside them) and put some paper in the shoes to make them straight. I recommend to spray a coat of primer before the paint, it is not extremely necessary but this will help it stick and looks better. After the primer dry, apply the paint in a very thin coat, not too close from your shoes. If it is necessary you can make an extra coat. Remove the paper and tapes after your shoes dry.

 Glitter Shoes

If you want something flashier you can cover your shoes with glitter. Sparkly shoes are a new trend and they can make you shine in any especial occasion. To make your glitter shoes you have to apply shoe glue on the surface using a soft brush (you can apply glitter in the entire shoe or only in some parts as heels) and pour glitter on them. You will probably have to repeat this process for two or three times until you cover them all but you must wait the first coat dry to make the second one. When the last your shoes dry, paint a layer of polyurethane over the glitter to not let them scape while you are walking (you can also apply hairspray to fix the glitter).

Shoes Laces

Romantic and sexy at same time, laces are an excellent option to renew your shoes in charming way. Cut a piece of lace that covers the upper part of the shoe (the heel will be done later). Apply shoe glue in the surface and start gluing the lace from the front part to the back (try to make the lace glue as flat as possible). Meet the lace edges in the back of the shoes removing any excess and gluing them together.  Remove the excess of the around the bottom and up the sides. Do the same process with the heels and apply more glue to the edges if necessary (the glue will be white but after dry it will disappear).

Rivets Shoes

Probably the easiest project, rivets are perfect to change the look of your shoes in a cheap and fast way. There are many kinds of rivets in the market with different shapes and colors but the easiest one to be used are the ones with small points in the back of the rivet (picture).  To apply the rivets in your shoes you will need to have pliers and patience. Press the rivet on the shoe carefully until it sticks and gets in. Close the points of the rivets very well using the pliers and if it is necessary you can give small beats to fix it well.
